ROOTS AND FRUITS

I started working for this organisation a couple of years ago as a volunteer. I was made responsible for the development of a garden at St Josephs. With the help of several other volunteers and funds from the Princess Trust I managed to persuade several local primary schools to send their pupils to the garden.

Here they planted fruit trees and grew other produce on raised beds. They also created willow domes and learned how to weave. All told I had seven schools on periodic visits. The pupils were taught about food and how to grow it. Wheat was milled and games were played as the children learned about the Picts as well as about what farmers grew at the beginning of the century.

Generally just about everything we did was directly related in some way to their school curriculum. Over the period that I worked there the project proved extremely successful in meeting its overall objectives. It even won us a TV slot on the Beechgrove Garden program.
